Naomi and I took a train to downtown Adelaide to browse in some shops and at a market. Adelaide is just another big city in Australia with lots of tall buildings. Like Melbourne, there is a river that goes through the city. Right by the river, there is a big grassy area where people can just relax and have a picnic. While there are several modern buildings, there are also lots of charming “neoclassicism” architure.

After browsing through some shops, we headed to a giant market where there are lots of vendors selling variety of food including fish, cheese, fruits, and vegetables. It reminded me of my Saturday mornings at Apt in France. When I saw all those fresh bread, pastries, and cheese, I was starving like hell! Naomi’s husband and her son, A, met us at the market, and we bought lots of yummy goodies for dinner.

As you can see from the photo, shopping at the market was a worthwhile as the dinner was SOOO GOOD!

First of all, I have to thank Naomi and her family for taking me out to one of the most wonderful restaurants that I have been in Australia, Red Ochre. The restaurant is situated by the river overlooking the city of Adelaide – a magnificent view!

A family who are good friends of Naomi’s family joined us. There were two sons and one of them is same age as me and has a cochlear implant. So, it was neat meeting him as it’s always enjoyable to meet other CI users to discuss our experiences of our upbringings.

I had a true taste of Australian food – kangaroo, emu, wallaby, quail, and lamb. All meat was outstandingly delicious, in particularly the kangaroo meat. I was told that kangaroo meat is low in fat and high in protein – interesting. It certainly doesn’t taste anything like steak! They were all just rich in flavor, so rich that I’m craving for more! Although, I have to admit that it was quite weird eating a kangaroo meat after petting a kangaroo this morning!

For dessert, I had cherry souffle – sooooo good!

Then after dinner, I went up to the mountains to photograph a stunning overview of the city of Adelaide!

Kangaroos are just too cool! They just hop all over the place, instead of running, and of course be lazy by relaxing on the ground. It’s obvious that Australia have unique animals as the country is so far away that its animals can’t migrate to other parts of the world.

After only seeing lazy kangaroos in closed space at the Tangora Zoo in Sydney and the Melbourne Zoo, I was so excited to finally see some kangaroos out in the wild, well, actually at a park called the Warrawong, where the space was plentiful, and hope all over the place!

One of my favorite parts was actually when one of the kangaroos who was just being lazy rolled over! I thought that was a hoot to see!

I also had a chance to pet a couple! They’re so cute and soft.

And here’s my favorite picture! This is just priceless!

Here are more images to see!! I did see some other strange animals such as the emus!

I just arrived in Adelaide, a city in the state of South Australia. For the next few days I’m staying with an Australian family, a family whom I met on CICircle, a listserv for parents of children with cochlear implants. One of the sons, A, has a cochlear implant and thus, it’s pretty cool to meet other people with cochlear implants from different parts of the world! I’m giving a talk tomorrow to a group of parents of children with cochlear implants, cochlear implant users, and a few professionals about the benefits of bilateral implantation. So, that’ll be exciting!

As soon as I landed, I took off for a mini-road trip. I came across a yellow sign with a black shape of a koala. What a shock! I knew that Australia had unique animals and that there were yellow signs with a black shape of a kangagroo, but I never thought that there would be one for koalas! That’s so sweet as koalas so cute that they deserve extra protection. A few moments later, I came across a sign that had warnings for both koala AND kangaroos. I know that some people think that koalas and kangaroos roaming through the wild is a stereotype, and they think that they just live in zoos, but I have to disagree. I came across a kaola resting by a tree next to road!!!

I also took a walk, and throughout the walk, I saw a few koalas resting on trees and some birds flying all over the place.

In spite of the fact that Australians speak the same language as the Americans, there are still some differences between the Australian English and the American English. Let me first tell a favorite story. A year ago, when I was in France and staying with a friend. My friend wanted to practice her English and so, she spoke English to me. She said, “I have to go the chemist.”

‘Huh?” I said.

“I have to go to the chemist,’ she said.

“What do you mean that you have to go to the chemist,” I asked.

“I have to go the chemist,” she said.

I told her to tell me the French word for “chemist.”

“It’s ‘pharmacie’” she said.

“AHA!! In American English, we say, “Pharmacy!”

Well, I’m now finally see the real word, “chemist” in Australia!

“Chemist” is not the only word that I have noticed that we say differently in America. “Lift” and “Way Out” are other examples. In American, we say “elevator” instead of “lift” and for “way out,” we say “exit.”

I have totally lost my sense of direction here! The roads are so different from US that my brain is totally confused by the direction of which way I need to look! As I head to a tram stop, I’m always about to head to the stop that goes in the opposite direction of where I want to go! Before I cross the street, I always have to look both sides with extra cautious as my brain is too fried to know which way to look first. When I was staying with a family prior to SCAD’s group trip in Sydney, I have often times accidentally opened the door to the driver’s seat…WHOOOPS!

Road signs are quite different including the pedestrian signs. As I was driving through the Great Ocean Road, I saw a kangaroo sign! Unfortunately, I was not able to snap a shot of that sign, but hopefully when I’m in Adelaide. I also saw quite a few signs saying “DRIVE ON THE LEFT IN AUSTRALIA!” Heeeeheeeee!

I also noticed that several people in Sydney drive mopeds. That’s a very typical European lifestyle!
