As a traveler, my goal is to correct the media’s inaccurate portrayal and stereotyping of other countries and to, instead, improve cultural awareness through education. For instance, the media depicts Israel as a dangerous country where war frequently exists; however, during my two visits staying with local families, I learned that the residents go on with their lives at work, school and leisure, partying in the streets on Friday nights, enjoying the beach life, etc. There were no signs of war during my visits. I also share the belief that traveling teaches many life skills that help in overcoming challenges and gaining independence, through, for example, learning to navigate unfamiliar places and learning to communicate with the local residents in foreign languages.
