The other day, I went with the host mother to pick up her 12 year old son at a sports game practice. She just simply told me that he was at a sports practice. I’m not a sports nutcake and so, I didn’t bother to ask her what sports it was. As soon as I entered the gym, I saw guys bouncing a ball and tossing it to each other. At that point, I thought, “Oh! They’re playing basketball! Cool!” Then, a few minutes later, I realized that there were no basketball hoops. Huh? What the heck is that game they were playing? I asked the host mother what was the name of the game, and she said, “Handball.”

“Ah! Okay cool!” I said. I thought to myself that the name of that sport did really fit with what I saw; however, I’ve never seen that sports in my life. Handball sure does look like it’s a lot of fun! It’s a combination of basketball and football.
I saw a match tonight, and the son’s team won. Whoo! Toot! Toot!
Now, I have to ask this question to anyone – Has any Americans heard of this sports??

My father played handball for years when I was a little kid…back in the 1960′s…but I think it was a different sport! Theirs was more similar to racquetball without a racquet! …Two guys wacked a small and very hard rubber ball against a wall…with their hand…in a small closed in court like a racquetball court.

Ah cool! Your description of how your father played does seem to be quite different from what I saw. The ball was rather a medium size and not too hard, from what I saw. It’s cool to know that at least the word “handball” existed in US! LOL!
