Bernini and Borromini are two extraordinary Baroque architects who created great energetic theatrical architectural designs. Both of them created convex and concaves, curvy, and elliptical forms in their designs which gave a very typical Baroque trace. Bernini’s Sant’ Andrea al Quirnale, and Borromini’s San Carlo alle Quatro Fontane and Sant’ Agnese have concave and convex designs on their exteriors. In Sant’ Agnese church, the bottom part, below the dome and the two towers, the design is concave. In other words, it looks like the wall is pushed inwards. In San Carlo alle Quatro, the exterior design depicts curves weaving in and out. In other words, there are both concave and convex and they interchange. This gives a dramatic and energetic appearance. Bernini also gives drama in his works by creating sculptural drama embedded into the architecture. For example, there is a sculpture in Santa Maria della Vittoria, St. Teresa of Avila, by Bernini that depicts a lot of motion and energy. Baroque period is known for depicting energy, drama, and motion in the designs.
