Unlike the Picture

I was standing in front of a giant sculpture that I have always seen in pictures in books throughout my life. This statue was beyond more incredible than I imagined. It was much more incredible than the images in the books. Not only that the muscles are well sculpted, but also the veins running through the arms were incredibly realistically sculpted. The face of this statue had an amazing “psychological” appearance. David looked like as if he was ready to fight against someone. He basically had a very angry appearance on his face. That was what made David so famous internationally. Michelangelo was the first sculpture to sculpt a person with an expressionistic appearance. In other words, we can read David’s mind by look at his expression. All the other sculptures before Michelangelo’s had no expression on their faces. This sculpture was very touching. I felt like I could touch him and cuddle with him. I have to admit that this statue was a very sexy looking man. I literally could not stop walking around him. I walked around him probably about at least 20 times!

I was in Accademia where David is placed. Accademia was Europe’s first Academy of Art which was started in 1570. There were several other Renaissance and Mannerist works, but not well known like the “David”, Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” nor Sandro Botticelli’s “Primavera.” The only other piece that was there that was quite well known was the “Rape of the Sabine Women” by Giambologna. This sculpture was magnificent and full of drama. The tensions of men grabbing each other were astonishing and depict a great amount of energy. This museum would not have been well – known if David wasn’t placed there.
