I was standing on a cliff and looking at a charming village that is built on an edge of a plateau known as Plateau de Vaucluse.  This village, Gordes, is located by Montagnes de Luberon in the Luberon region, a region in Provence.  This scenery was surreal as I wondered what it’s like to live on the edge of the plateau.  When my feet was on the soil of Gordes, I sure did feel that I was walking up and down the mountains like I am doing every day in Lacoste.  The view of Montagnes de Luberon from Gordes is serene.  There are beautiful mountains surrounding the town.  The landscape was as green as it could be.

In middle of the village, there is castle that was built in 11th century.  It was actually modified several times over the centries to protect themselves from wars.  In fact, in 1811, the castle became a town hall!

Like many little villages in France, there is a church, but a very old church.  This church in Gordes was created in 18th century.  The architecture of the interior is beautiful as there are variety of colors including pink, blue, green, and gold.  While the ceiling seems to be a gothic design as it has vaulted arches, it’s not gothic as it the ceiling was structured differently.  While many churches have three isles, this one has only one isle.  However, there are archades, a row of arches on the sides like many old churches.

Walking through Gordes was like traveling back in time as the buildings and the roads are very old.  A good part of the road is made of stones.  Many of the buildings are built next to each other, which is very typical in Europe as the spaces are small.
